Hidden Valley Workshops is bringing its Practical Pruning workshop to Mole Creek on Sunday 23 August 2026. It runs from 9:30am to 2:00pm in an established two acre garden and orchard. It is a hands on day.
The garden holds a wide range of mature fruit trees and berries that are genuinely due for attention, which makes it a good place to learn. The day opens with a tour of the garden over a hot drink and a biscuit, then gets straight into the pruning.
What the day covers
- Rejuvenating an apple tree of mature years that is badly in need of it
- Pruning a couple of sweet cherries that have reached middle age, to encourage maximum fruiting in the years ahead
- An established pear T-espalier, which gives you the basis for pruning any older apple or pear espalier
- After lunch, the berry cage: blackcurrants, blueberries and redcurrants
- The gooseberries, if time allows and you are willing to approach them from a safe distance
- Time permitting, there is also the option of a wayward fig, a trellis of grapes or a congested quince
The aim is that you go home confident enough to tackle your own trees, including bringing the height of mature trees back down so they are easier to prune and pick in future.
